Round one of our 2024/25 championship took us to Blackpool. Firstly we’d like to thank everyone involved at Charged RC for hosting a fantastic event and also to Blackpool and Fylde RCCC for running race control.
Following 2 practice rounds, our 35 competitors moved on to qualifying. Based on last years standings, the top seed, Sam Coult set the pace with an opener of 31 laps, closely followed by Matt Gammons also posting 31 laps.
Round 2 saw Matt and Sam swap over for the top 2 places with Ewan Thompson and Michael Laws joining them in posting 31 laps, with 6 seconds separating the top 4.
On to round 3, where Matt retained P1 but now with Ewan taking P2 with just under a second separating them.
There were no improvements after a scrappy round 4 meaning we saw Matt Gammons take his first national TQ, closely followed by Ewan, Sam and Michael being the only 4 drivers to post 31 laps during the qualifying rounds.
Next the finals…
Congratulations to the top 3 in the C final 1. Ethan Boyce 2. Gary Pugh 3. Ashley Pearce
A dominant win in the B final went to Sion Wedley with second and third battling it out to see Adam Mullock crossing the line just 0.4s ahead of Simon Galbraith.
Our last race of the day, as ever, was the A final. A heavy shunt while forming on the grid saw urgent repairs to allow Ewan to start the race. Matt lead from start to finish, and despite his damaged car, Ewan managed to keep Sam behind him, to see the top 3 finishers match the qualifying line up. Behind them there was some close competition, with fifth and sixth being separated by 0.7s and plenty of swapped positions from qualifying.
