A new class in the 1/12 Section that aims to complete the progression ladder by connecting entry level racing to national competition with a relevant, cost-effective and straightforward class to race at clubs all over the UK.
It has been felt for some time that in order for the 1/12 section to grow, participation needs to increase at the entry and mid levels (i.e. clubs). A straightforward and logical progression ladder is also required to support steady growth. LMP12 is a fast and technically demanding class; great for those already doing it and for racers with lots of experience, but there isn't really an easy pathway in to it and it is not an easy class to race at club level. This is a worry as without a steady influx of new participants the numbers will steadily dwindle and the LMP12 class will become unsustainable.
Over the last 18 months the Mini class has emerged and grown into a brilliant first step on the 1/12 circuit pathway. The majority of people racing minis are happy with what they're doing, but what about those who are looking for the next step on their RC journey? Moving from minis into LMP12 (or even GT12) is not a step, it is a massive leap. Perhaps then an intermediate step would be appealing? Such a thing could also be attractive to LMP12 racers who want something cheaper and easier to race at their local club.
This is where LMGT3 is being pitched! A class that shares the chassis DNA of LMP12 but is much cheaper to run and for which clubs can fine tune their own rules according to what their racers wish to run.
It's pretty straightforward; get yourself a new or second hand LMP12 or GT12 chassis, drop some mini electrics in it, fit a GT style bodyshell and some tyres and go racing!
