This months round of this series saw just under 70 drivers gather at the most northern venue in this years calendar, the Sheffield Off-Road & Rally Club. Their track is primarily grass but the club had laid Astroturf and some carpet to protect the surface after the extremely dry Spring we’ve been having. As is the norm at 1/10 Truck Nationals open practice started Saturday noon. In dry, sunny weather, lots of drivers made the effort and it soon became apparent that some of the unprotected corners would need changing, which the club did after practice. Unfortunately, due to a clash of dates, the regular contingent from Eden Park Raceway, in the south, would not be able to make this round.
Sunday’s weather started cloudy, with a chill but still dry so timed practice started promptly to be followed by the usual four rounds of round-by-round qualifying, 8 heats would include all four different classes of 1/10 electric Truck that the section supports these days, 4WD Short Course, 2WD Short Course, Stadium Truck and within that class the new, for 2025, Vintage/Rear Motor Stadium Trucks, them basically running to Iconic Revival regulations with a 10.5 turn brushless motor limit.
4WD Short Course and Top Qualifier would be Eddy Rowland, unfortunately Eddy had to pull out of the event after only 2 rounds! Adam Charlesworth would line up second on the grid having TQ’d rounds 3 & 4 with Saul Hocking taking third spot. With Eddy out, it was all to play for in all three legs of the final. First leg, Adam had a commanding lead until rear suspension failure with two laps to go, only Saul got past on the penultimate lap. Fortunately for Adam, Paul Mycock missed getting on to the extra lap by a fraction of a second, so Adam finished second with Paul third. Second leg and Adam won easily from Saul and Mark Hicks, leaving the overall result to be decided by the third and final leg. A leg which saw a close battle between Adam and Saul, after several lead changes Adam won the leg from Saul with Mark third, and this too, would be the overall result.
2WD Short Course qualification and TQ/Pole Position for the finals was taken by top junior Jamie Long, Neil Atack, who TQ’d round 1, would qualify second and Stuart Carling third. Again three finals for all with the best two to count and Jamie would take all 3 Legs. The battle was for second and with Stuart and Neil both having a second and third from legs 1 and 2, it would all be decided by the third and final leg, Unfortunately Neil dropped out of this leg early on allowing Stuart to finish second and thereby nick second place overall. The B Final was won by Dave Searle with junior Seb Birchall second and John Yarham SR third.
And finally to the Stadium Trucks including the Vintage/Rear Motor class. Qualification was dominated by the very experienced Eugene Galley with his Schumacher Storm ST2 taking all 4 Rounds and with it pole position for the main final, followed by, Round 1 at Telford runner-up, Tony Bishop with another Schumacher and Keith Robertson and his Team Associated T6.4 third overall. It was good to note that 4 Juniors would make the A Final, Rhys Ward, Cameron Charity, Alex Pyatt and Jamie Long. In the finals Eugene would hold his nerve with Tony and Keith following closely. Overall, Eugene won, winning all three legs with two to count, from Tony, runner-up again and Keith third, Cameron would move up from seventh on the grid to finish fourth overall and finish as top ST Junior.
The B Final was won by Neil Atack, the C Final was won by Steve Bunning, also in this final was Mark Hicks with his rear motor AE RC10T, taking the win in the Vintage/Rear Motor class. The D Final was won by Rob Hancock again with another rear motor truck.
